Step 1: Finish the three required courses

Before the DRE will let you sit the salesperson exam you need three college-level courses: Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and one elective such as Real Estate Finance, Legal Aspects of Real Estate, Real Estate Appraisal, Property Management or Escrows. Each course is three semester units or four quarter units, and Real Estate Practice courses taken since January 1, 2024 must include implicit bias and fair housing components.

Step 2: Study by exam weight, not by chapter

A quarter of the exam is Practice of Real Estate and Disclosures, and another 17% is agency. Put most of your hours where the points are. See the full breakdown on the California real estate exam topics page.

Step 3: Learn the rule and its source

California exam questions test specific rules: the 3-day and 5-day disclosure termination right, the 3-business-day trust fund deadline, the 21-day security deposit return, the 3-year record retention rule. When you know the statute behind a rule, the wrong answers become obvious. That is why every PassRE answer names its code section.

Step 4: Drill with practice questions every day

Do short sets daily rather than one long cram session. Start with the free 24-question practice test and the vocabulary quiz, then move to full-length timed practice.

Step 5: Take full timed practice exams

The real exam is 150 questions in 3 hours, about 72 seconds per question. Practise at that pace so exam day feels familiar. The PassRE app includes a timed exam simulator that matches the format.
